Mark Walks LEJOG Day 23 – Tettenhall Wood to Wheaton Aston

Hullo. How are you? I hope you are having a good day. I’m Mark and I’m walking from Land’s End to John O’Groats…

I headed away from Tettenhall Wood with a spring in my step this morning. Between Tettenhall and Market Drayton in Shropshire, I have family walking with me, so my heavy backpack was deposited in the car and whisked away.

Heading towards Codsall, we found a smashing little cafe for breakfast and spent plenty of time filling up for the walk ahead.

Codsall is a lovely town, with a bustling little high street and handsome residential neighbourhoods. Although small, the town has a rail station with a nod to the past.

Leaving Codsall, I walked through fields and farmland towards Brewood, which included crossing the Chillington Hall estate, with its impressive long drive.

Just moments after crossing the drive an almighty hailstorm arrived suddenly, which was a lot of fun and exciting, with huge cracks of thunder.

The rain continued as I walked to Brewood, where I joined the Shropshire Union Canal, giving occasional shelter under its regular bridges. And then, as suddenly as the hail and rain arrived, it was gone and the sun broke through the clouds.

The final miles towards Wheaton Aston included passing over the Stretton viaduct, which was one of many reminders of the importance of Thomas Telford in this region.

Arriving at Wheaton Aston, it was good to see the village celebrating its famous connection with the lily Snake’s-head Fritillary, which the locals seem very proud of.

Today was a relatively short walk of around 11.5 miles, but I still think that justifies the massive Indian meal this evening.

Fundraising for MacMillan Cancer Support

As I walk from Land’s End to John O’Groats, I am hoping to raise £10,000 for MacMillan Cancer Support, who do such a wonderful job of supporting families through the most difficult times. If you are able to spare any amount and would like to donate to MacMillan, please do so through my Just Giving Page.
