Mark Walks LEJOG Day 37 – Pooley Bridge to Southwaite

Hullo. How are you? I hope you are having a good day. I’m Mark and I’m walking from Land’s End to John O’Groats…

It was a beautiful, sunny morning as I left the hotel and headed immediately onto country paths away from Pooley Bridge.

The first few miles of today’s walk were also the last few miles of walking in the stunning Lake District, so it was an impressive and uplifting way to get the day going.

Walking away from Ullswater meant impressive views behind me of the mountains reaching up to the clouds and revealing themselves for the first time in the last few days.

At St Michael Barton, the charming church was busy with worshippers, with an overflowing car park spilling out along the lanes.

I came across a self service milk shop standing at the side of the road. What a great idea and excellent way for the farm to sell its goods to thirsty walkers or commuters in need of a coffee fix.

Walking into Sockbridge, I crossed the boundary of the Lake District but the countryside remained gorgeous.

It was then an easy stroll to Penrith through farmland and along country tracks before hitting the edge of the town and crossing over the motorway.

I spent a little time visiting Penrith castle and wandering around town before following the main road to the north and back over the motorway onto a long and straight minor road, which runs parallel to the motorway but with none of the traffic.

The second half of the walk was completely different to the first, which I like – variety on a walk is one of my favourite things.

The empty road made for a really easy afternoon amble and a quirky feeling as the motorway was for most of the time just metres away.

I made my way to Southwaite listening to podcasts and taking in the views of the Pennine hills on the other side of the M6.

Fundraising for MacMillan Cancer Support

As I walk from Land’s End to John O’Groats, I am hoping to raise £10,000 for MacMillan Cancer Support, who do such a wonderful job of supporting families through the most difficult times. If you are able to spare any amount and would like to donate to MacMillan, please do so through my Just Giving Page.

Indeed. But probably eating too well on this trip! I might be the only person to do LEJOG and end up fatter than when I started 😂
